As a freelancer, I've been working closely with ad agencies, web design companies, magazine and book publishers from across North America, helping them create winning images for promotions, campaigns and editorials since 1999. From 1986 to 1999 I worked hard and gained skills as an in-house illustrator in both architectural and advertising agencies.
It's great to be able to work one on one with my clients, creating quality product illustrations, maps, line art, retouching, presentation art and more. Finding new and creative ways to get the job done, solving problems and keeping tight deadlines is business as usual.
Drawing from experience beyond just computers and software, has allowed me to add that special kind of craftsmanship and technical understanding to a set of well defined styes of illustration, photo retouching and design. Whether for advertising, editorial or web, I feel I can offer a unique perspective in problem solving and creativity. I work to deadlines, have competitive pricing and communication is quick and direct.
There are never two pieces of illustration exactly alike and different Illustrators have different styles and ways of working. Many factors have to be considered when estimating a competitive price for each work.
What I try to do is create a fair price based on the following guidelines;
- Content: Is the illustration colour, grey scale or line art? Is the subject simple, highly detailed or complex?
- Size: Will the work be reproduced at a large size requiring high resolution? Will there be multiple sizes or proportions requiring extra bleed area?
- Timing: Is the art work needed yesterday? Does the work need to be completed over a Weekend or Holiday? Is there extra time?
- Usage: How will the image be used? Will it be used more than once and in different media? Is a buyout required?
I also use the Graphic Artists Guild hand book of pricing and ethical guidelines. I base my estimates on the latest information I have. If the information changes, a new estimate may be required to reflect those changes.
